The Hidden Gem of Georgetown

There are too many hidden gems in Washington to count. Oak Hill Cemetery lies sandwiched between Georgetown and Rock Creek Parkway running along the hillsides near Dumbarton Oaks.

Its winding paths and mausoleums tucked into the hillsides don’t feel like it belongs in Washington and its isolation from the surrounding neighborhood and Rock Creek Park make it a little slice of serenity in the city.

Tucked throughout its many notable residents are people like Ben Bradlee and Katharine Graham of the Washington Post, Dean Acheson - Harry Truman’s Secretary of State, and Edwin Stanton - Lincoln’s Secretary of War. The cemetery was also home to Willy Lincoln for a short time.

The beautiful colors of fall weren’t so spectacular this year. However, a few wonderful trees still make this place a treat. The winding paths meander up and down the hills and make wandering to find the notable DC names a treat.

Stop in at the gatehouse to speak with the very knowledgeable staff and you might even get a chance to see the inside of the Renwick Chapel. The cemetery doesn’t keep long hours so make sure to allow yourself time to wander the whole place.
