Drama over the Cherry Blossoms

If you’re a regular reader here (thank you!) you’ve seen me talk about taking a chance on days when the forecast is good. It doesn’t always pay off. But when it does, you come away with images you’ll remember.

This morning was one of those days. Hovering somewhere between 0-10% chance of a quality sunrise, the forecasts all told me to turn off the alarms and go back to bed. Looking at the sky told me a different story. Broken low clouds meant I had a chance at something special.

As I arrived at the Tidal Basin, my heart sank. At 5:50am, there was a low band of clouds right along the horizon. Exactly what I didn’t want to help the sun get under and light up the sky. I framed up a few images and took some throw away frames to get my rhythm going. As the sky began to glow a pale blue, the faintest purple hue caught the underside of a cloud. As sunrise grew closer, the sky caught. The edges of the clouds caught this wonderful combination of purple, magenta and orange.

With the drama in the sky, my camera decided it wanted to introduce a little more drama in the morning. A loose screw on the mount for my long lens meant that I couldn’t fully mount it. Even worse, it was partially stuck to the adapter. After a few agonizing minutes of trying, it freed and I was able to use my mid range lens for the rest of the morning.
